short info Donori
Agri-food products of excellence and deep devotion characterize this village in the southern area of Sardinia, thirty kilometres to Cagliari.
Located in the historic region of Parteolla, bordering southern Campidano, Donori lies between two rivers on the slope of Monte Zurru and has just over two thousand inhabitants.
Once a mining center, as the remains of the former Monteponi mine attest, Donori has today, thanks to the fertility of the surrounding hilly area and the abundance of water, a strong agricultural and pastoral vocation: cereals, olive oil, wines, including cannonau and bovale, and a renowned dairy production are its main agri-food products.
The former granatic mountain in the village centre, now used for exhibitions, testifies to the antiquity of the agro-pastoral tradition.
Inhabited since the Bronze Age, in fact, as evidenced in particular by the nuraghi sa Domu and s'Orcu mannu and Guntuxius, the area also has traces of Roman rule: remains of a necropolis and a villa. The village was however founded in the Middle Ages, under the Giudicato of Cagliari, abandoned during the fifteenth century, and repopulated starting in 1619.
Built in Gothic-Catalan style at the end of the 15th century, the beautiful parish church of San Giorgio bishop characterizes the old village centre.
Near the village, surrounded by olive groves, you find the country church of Santa Maria de sa Defenza, dating back to 1732: legend tells that it was built by a bandit from Barbagia who was hiding on Mount Zurru. Into this small church the simulacrum of Our Lady of Defense is carried on the third Sunday of September on the occasion of the most heartfelt celebration by the population. It is accompanied by a parade of people in Donorese costumes and traccas (decorated carts).
Among the areas of naturalistic interest in the Donori territory, we find the former mine site, at the foot of Mount Andria in Località S'Ortu Becciu (the old vegetable garden) and Sa Rocca de is Piccionisi (the rock of the pigeons), gorges and unspoiled nature set between two small hills.
