Description:

.

Metamora is a charming village located in Lapeer County, in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2015 census, the village had a population of 597 and lies within Metamora Township. Lapeer County, established on September 18, 1822 and fully organized on February 2, 1835, is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a population of over 4.3 million. As of 2015, Lapeer County itself had a population of 88,319, with Lapeer serving as the county seat. The county’s name originates from a corruption of the French phrase la pierre, meaning “the flint.”

Metamora Township is located between Oxford and Lapeer, and its name is derived from a Native American term meaning “among the hills.” With elevations ranging from 903 feet at Lake Metamora to 1,280 feet at Mount Christie, the area truly sits on a higher plane. Despite growth and development, the Metamora community continues to embrace its historic charm and country traditions. It’s a place where residents and visitors alike can escape the fast pace of city life and enjoy an authentic small-town atmosphere.

One of Metamora’s most notable landmarks is the White Horse Inn, a beloved historic restaurant and gathering place. The area’s beautiful rolling countryside has long attracted horse enthusiasts, and The Metamora Hunt—a traditional foxhunting group—has been an integral part of the community for generations.

Outdoor recreation also plays a significant role in local life. The Detroit Area Boy Scout Ranch on E. Sutton Road and the Metamora Girl Scout Camp on Caley Road offer year-round activities for youth. The township features a variety of golf courses, waterfront residential areas, and large parcels of land perfect for horseback riding and agriculture.
